Vancouver Welcomes the Best of Swiss Design

Emily Carr presents the innovative creations of Switzerland’s top designers in the Design Preis Schweiz, Swiss Design Award, exhibition. On its last stop of the world tour featuring 2009 prize winners, the exemplary exhibit showcases the 3 main trademarks of Swiss design: innovation, functionality and quality.

A representative of the Swiss Consulate introduced the discussion panel today, including Canadian and Swiss designers and educators, Sandra Kaufman, Jonathan Aitken, Christian Blyt, Heidi Wegener and Andres Wanner. Panelists shared ideas as to how culture, geography, history, sustainability, education and research shaped products and the way design is perceived by the two countries. The discussion led to the launch of the Swiss exhibit where the ideas discussed were conveyed in the winner’s product designs.

“Switzerland is a small country that has few raw materials, we had to develop other skills,” said Heidi Wegener, Curator of Design Preis Schweiz, “innovation came from such situations.”
